Flavor & balance:

Highly malty and often sweet and thick. The malt character follows beer color with pale examples being bready and toasty while darker examples show toffee and chocolate flavors.
Alcohol warmth may be apparent.

History:

Originally brewed by monks as liquid bread for sustenance during fasts.
